About the Real Mercedes-Benz 1418

The Mercedes-Benz 1418 is a classic of Brazil's short-bonnet ("cara-chata", or Kurzhauber) truck era. In Mercedes-Benz's naming, the "1418" marks a 14-tonne class truck with around 180 hp, drawn from the OM 352/355 inline-six diesel family. Mercedes-Benz do Brasil brought the short-bonnet range to Brazil in 1964 and gave it a facelift in 1982 — the squared black grille and rectangular headlights seen here — keeping these rugged, easily-maintained trucks in production into the 1990s. Alongside stablemates like the 1513, the 1418 was a workhorse of Brazilian freight for decades and is a beloved classic today.
